The equipment finance industry continues to demonstrate resilience, with demand remaining strong despite a changing economic environment. According to the latest ELFA CapEx Finance Index, new business volume reached $10.5 billion in June, increasing 2.5% month-over-month and 17.2% year-over-year. Total equipment finance volume is projected to reach $129 billion in 2026 — the highest level recorded since the survey began in 2006.
Financial conditions also remain healthy, with delinquencies falling to a multi-year low and losses staying modest. ELFA characterized the recent cooling as normalization rather than a weakening of fundamentals, noting that the two-year trend in activity remains upward even amid geopolitical uncertainty and the potential for Federal Reserve rate changes in 2026. These indicators highlight a stable market where businesses continue to invest in equipment.
At the same time, the decision-making process behind these investments is changing. Companies are taking a more thoughtful approach as they evaluate costs, risks, and long-term value before committing capital. Factors such as interest rates, economic uncertainty, and increasingly complex purchasing decisions are influencing how organizations approach equipment acquisitions.
A strong equipment finance market does not always mean faster decisions. Today's businesses are still investing, but they are becoming more strategic about when and where they allocate capital.
This shift reinforces the importance of data-driven decision-making. As explored in our blog “Why Equipment Acquisition Cycles Are Getting Longer,” equipment buyers are navigating a more complex evaluation process, making transparency, insights, and smarter risk assessment increasingly important.
For lenders, the opportunity is clear: combining technology, data, and industry expertise can help create more efficient processes, better understand customer needs, and make smarter credit decisions.
